“Look through the telescope and tell me what you see.”

“There’s a woman.”

“Who’s with her?”

“I can’t… oh, oh there’s another woman—maybe her friend?”

“What are they doing?”

“They’re talking.”

“Keep watching. Tell me what you see.”

“They’re still talking. One is laughing but her face is kinda nervous. The other… she’s not happy. No, no she’s getting mad. She’s starting to talk—no, now she’s yelling. She’s pointing fingers. The other girl’s confused, like she doesn’t know what just happened. The one who yelled is crying now. The confused one is reaching out a hand, but the crying one won’t take it. She keeps pointing at the door. She’s yelling something… I think she’s saying ‘get out, get out’. The other girl is… now she’s mad too. She’s grabbing her bag. She’s gone.”

“What do you think?”

“About what?”

“About what you just saw?”

“Well… well, I don’t understand it. When we saw them a few hours ago they were having such a lovely time.”

“Why do you think they fought?”

“Maybe they weren’t as close as we thought?”

“I promise you, that is not the reason.”

“Well what else could it be then?”

“Clearly something has changed.”

“Oh, well, do enlighten me! What do you suppose changed?”

“Obviously one did something the other did not like. There was a lack of communication as to what that was exactly. More likely than not they never talked through it; they probably didn’t even bring it up. It’s all the angry girl could think about when we last saw them. It so consumed her thoughts that she never let it go through the entirety of the visiting girl’s stay. The first is hurt and feels she has a right to an apology from the latter.”

“Well maybe she does.”

“It’s possible, but answer me this.”

“What?”

“Is an apology, especially over something that A) is most likely superficial and B) may not even be of any concern of the ‘victim’s’, truly worth ending a friendship that, as we witnessed, was something quite special?”

“I don’t suppose it is, no.”

“Then why do you suppose they can’t remember how much they care for one another, recognize that their fight is petty at best, and just put it all behind them? After all, at this point I don’t think it fair to say that either is righteous in their wants.”

“Maybe the problems go deeper?”

“Doubtful. I’m sure they both think that is the case, but I am inclined to believe that those thoughts are melodramatic and rooted in their own self-pity.”

“That sounds rather immature.”

“Indeed it does. Now keep guessing.”

“Well, they are only human.”

“That’s hardly an excuse.”

“They’re awful young.”

“Still inadequate by my standards.”

“Then perhaps they both just need to do a little growing.”

“Perhaps.”
